Fairy-tales, magic, and hopeful stories are some of my favorite things . I have been able to find these qualities in books, music, and movies, but never really in a television series, until I discovered my current tv obsession, Once Upon A Time.
Once Upon A Time begins with the un-expecting heroine, Emma, encountering her son, Henry whom she gave up for adoption ten years ago, on the night of her twenty-eighth birthday. Henry is convinced that Emma is the only one who can save his town from the curse they’ve been placed under, which forced the residents to forget their past-lives as fairy-tale characters, and brings her to the tiny town of Storybrooke, Maine where the plot begins to unfold.
Emma Swan is completely rational, and entirely grounded in what she knows to be reality despite her sons numerous attempts to convince her that she is the savior to the cursed characters of our favorite stories. Throughout the series the plot alternates between present day life in Storybrooke, and life as it was in the Enchanted Forest before the curse was cast by the evil queen. I love this approach, because it gives viewers something tangible and familiar to latch on to, while also creating a sense of excitement and mystery with the clues we are given as to the back-stories of the population of Storybrooke.
The show is filled with an entertaining and endearing cast of characters, a new take on beloved tales, and a heroine you will be rooting for! You can catch Once Upon A Time season one on Netflix, past season two episodes on ABC’s website , new episodes every Sunday at 8/7c on ABC.
